Love is a decision, NOT a feeling. In a world where love is often portrayed as a whirlwind of emotions and butterflies in your stomach, this statement might seem counterintuitive. But, if we've ever pondered the true essence of love, we'd know that it's not just about what we feel; it's largely about what we choose to do. Knowing this difference is liberating. It makes more sense to keep going even when the going gets tough. And as we choose to unleash this innate strength, transformations and breakthroughs begin to happen.

In its simplest definition, to love is to will the good of the other. To truly love entails that we decide what’s the best way forward that brings a better version of the other while respecting our own boundaries. The process can be exhilarating as we envision our loved ones soaring, it can also be heart-wrenching from the sacrifices put in and the pains that our loved ones need to go through to grow. These are tough decisions that a mother battles with constantly.

Choosing Love When It Gets Inconvenient:

Love calls for us to be there to support, nurture, and care for those who hold a special place in our heart. Standing by our loved ones through thick and thin, in sickness and in health requires conscious effort, especially in the face of competing priorities and limited bandwidth. Guilt trips begins to surface as well. Regardless … cognizant of these cocktails of feelings, we soldier on to love and serve.

Taking the Road Less Travelled:

Sometimes, love requires us to take the road less travelled. It might mean making sacrifices, putting in extra effort, while establishing trust, having the humility to acknowledge we do not have all the answers and mustering the courage to face what’s ahead despite all the anxieties. It's a journey of growth, resilience, deep connection and embracing our authentic selves as we forge the unique path that works best for everyone.

Unconditional Love:

True love is unconditional. It doesn't come with a list of demands or conditions. It doesn't waver when faced with imperfections or difficulties. Instead, it remains steadfast, forgiving, and patient. It's the kind of love that says, "I choose you, flaws and all." Choosing to love the unlovable in the family grinds our patience. Ironically that’s when our heart begins to expand with a greater capacity to love.

Love in Action:

Love is best expressed through the little things we do daily to show we care. It's a hug when someone's feeling down, a helping hand when they're in need, or a listening ear when they want to talk. Love is the choices we make to enable our loved ones to take their next baby step.

In a world that often confuses love with fleeting emotions, it is above all, a conscious decision. It's a commitment to cherish, protect, and uplift those we hold dear. It goes beyond human logic and any conceivable imagination as love knows no bounds. So, let's continue to take courage to embrace love as the steadfast force that guides our actions and choices. As we watch how it transforms our lives and the lives of those we love, may we be awed by the revelation of what we’re truly made of.
